Les jeunes cigognes ont le bec d\u2019abord noir puis brun. Il mesure en moyenne 100 \u00e0 115 cm de la pointe du pic \u00e0 la fin de la queue, ses ailes peuvent atteindre une envergure de 155 \u00e0 215 cm et un poids de 2,3 \u00e0 4,5 kg. Ils vivent dans des zones mar\u00e9cageuses, des prairies humides et des eaux de surface sur des terrains ouverts. Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un oiseau migrateur qui rejoint ses quartiers d&rsquo;hiver en Afrique de l&rsquo;Est en suivant deux routes bien d\u00e9finies (par le d\u00e9troit de Gibraltar et par le Bosphore). Son grand nid est situ\u00e9 \u00e0 haute altitude, sur des b\u00e2timents, des tours, des chemin\u00e9es et des arbres, dans des emplacements d\u00e9gag\u00e9s. Le temps d\u2019incubation pour ses 3 \u00e0 5 \u0153ufs est de 33 ou 34 jours. Les poulets restent au nid de 54 \u00e0 63 jours. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la quatri\u00e8me semaine apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9closion, il y a toujours un adulte qui reste vigilant \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du nid. Apr\u00e8s cette p\u00e9riode, l\u2019un des parents peut d\u00e9j\u00e0 s\u2019occuper de la prog\u00e9niture en solitaire. <\/span><span>Il se nourrit de petits mammif\u00e8res, insectes, vers; en plus petites quantit\u00e9s \u00e9galement des grenouilles, des crustac\u00e9s, des l\u00e9zards, des serpents, des poissons et des charognes. \u00c0 leur retour de leur caserne d\u2019hiver, ils se nourrissent d\u2019abord pratiquement de vers de terre (jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 90%).
