Only 22 km. from Cordoba, Almodovar del Rio stands majestically in the heart of the Guadalquivir Valley. Crowned by its millenary fortress, it offers a rich historical, artistic, gastronomic and natural heritage, with a large part of the municipality belonging to the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park. Its medieval castle, setting for the filming of Game of Thrones, its location as a natural vantage point and its intricate old town with its steep, whitewashed streets make it a unique visit.

Thematic routes


We propose a heritage route through the main landmarks of the historic centre of Almodóvar del Río. A circular route through the most famous streets and squares of the town, passing by its main historic buildings, fountains and other recently built monuments that illustrate the history and legends of the town.

The Roman Baetica Route is a cultural route that includes scenic areas of great geographical and natural interest, and covers territories through which the ancient Via Augusta passed. It currently passes through twelve towns in the provinces of Seville, Cadiz and Cordoba, including Almodóvar del Río.

The GR-48 or Sierra Morena Trail runs along public paths in the provinces of Huelva, Seville, Cordoba and Jaen, covering a total of 550 km in 30 stages. Two of these stages have Almodóvar del Río as the point of arrival and departure, respectively, marking the transition between the Vega del Guadalquivir and Sierra Morena.
