MAMMALS

Genet

The look of the genet resembles that of a cat, although more stylized. Its head is elongated, with large and rounded ears. The yellowish grey coat is mottled with stripes on the back, while the tail, long and hairy, has dark rings. It measures about 95 cm and weighs 2 kg and there is hardly any sexual dimorphism. It is also called “Arab cat”. It has five toes, both on the feet and on the hands, but usually only leaves four of them imprinted on it, unless the ground is very soft. It lives alone, except in the breeding season. The breeding season usually takes place at the beginning of spring. The female has a single annual litter, of two or three young. It is an agile hunter of small birds, rodents, insects and even rabbits. In autumn the fruits play an important role in your diet. The genet likes wooded areas of oaks, holm oaks, pine and olive groves, with streams and rocks. It is distributed throughout almost the entire Peninsula, except for the southeast and part of Galicia, and the Balearic Islands.
