IBERIAN FLORA
Gladiolus
It is a perennial and bulbous plant native to the northern region of the Mediterranean belonging to the genus Gladiolus, the gladiolus. They can reach a height of about 40 to 70 cm, with linear green leaves sprouting from an underground organ called the corm. The flowers are grouped in inflorescences and are zigomorphs, as well as hermaphroditic and pink. The fruit is a dry capsule of 3 leaflets containing winged seeds. After flowering, both the flower stem, flowers and leaves are dried, leaving only the fruits if it has produced them, and the corm, which will keep the plant alive thanks to the nutrients that its roots have been absorbing during the vegetative period, that is, of growth. They bloom in summer. Although they bloom for a very short period of time, their petals are colorful and decorative, so they are plants with a high ornamental value. It is native to the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, and the northern Mediterranean countries; among them France, Italy, Greece, Turkey… It lives in grasslands and rocks.
