Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park
The Park occupies 60,000 ha. of land in the municipalities of Hornachuelos, Villaviciosa, Posadas and Almodóvar del Río. In our town, the mountain habitat makes up 25% of the total municipal area and 7% of it is within the Natural Park, a protected area that extends from the tails of the La Breña II reservoir in a northerly direction. In the mountain range we can find peaks that reach a maximum height of 511 metres above sea level. These lands are colonised by Mediterranean forests, mainly holm oaks and cork oaks.
It is a very well preserved enclave that is home to a varied and rich biodiversity. It has an important hydrographic network, formed by the rivers Guadiato, which irrigates the north-eastern area, and La Cabrilla, which irrigates the north-western area. It is home to an important hunting activity, mainly dedicated to deer and wild boar hunting. There are also pig, cattle and sheep farms, as well as the traditional cork harvest that takes place every nine years. The richness of the flora has made it possible for activities typical of this Sierra to take off, such as the development of beekeeping, a traditional practice that is gradually reaching its peak.
