The country rabbit has a thick and woolly coat, pale brown to gray on the back and whitish on its belly. Its head is round and its eyes large and brown. It is characterized above all by its long ears, up to 7 cm. Its tail is very short and lacks the black spot on the back that the hare has. The forelegs are shorter than the hind legs. It does not show sexual dimorphism. t measures 33 to 40 cm between the head and body, and has a tail of 4 to 6 cm. Its weight is about 1.5 kg. It lives in dry meadows, forest borders, parks, etc. In the mountains it can live up to 1,500 m in height, although it is rather a typical species of Mediterranean scrubland, especially holm oak and kermes oak. It is very adaptable, although it avoids large forests. It requires a soil where it can excavate. For reproduction they build a special chamber 150 cm long, excavated at a depth of 50 cm. In nature, the mating period extends from March to September, lasting the gestation about 30 days. With 3 to 4 births per year, they give birth to 4 or 5 babies. It feeds on plants of all kinds, preferably their buds, leaves, bark, fruits and wild berries, which are greedily consumed, as well as mushrooms. Occasionally ingests animal matter as a supplementary diet. This mammal is distributed throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
