Owl

The common owl is a small owl; it hardly lifts 22 cm, with a wingspan of about 50 cm. Its appearance is rounded, rather plump and with a wide head. Its plumage is mainly brown-gray, on which stand out its yellow eyes. In the Iberian Peninsula is common on the Mediterranean coast. It occupies semi-desert areas, cultivated or uncultivated steppes, fruit orchards and farmland, especially near human settlements. The owl lives in couple continuously, spending all his life in the breeding territory, in the same nest. This is usually located in a cavity: a hollow tree, a crack in the rocks, a ruined building. During the mating season, which runs through March and April, he utters a wide variety of cries, particularly slow and melodic trills. The laying takes place in late April or early May. This incubation is exclusively in charge of the female, who during that time is fed by the male. Once the eggs hatch, the chickens remain in the nest hole for a month. In early July they begin to fly, and in August they are already independent and leave their parents’ territory. In summer, the little owl feeds mainly on insects during the day and hunts larks and mice in the dark. In any case, whatever he eats, he swallows it without breaking. It is active mainly in the dark, but also during the day. In the light, the flight is undulating, but at night it is in a straight line above the ground.
