Strawberry Tree

This fruit tree is a species native to the Iberian Peninsula. Arbutus unedo is the scientific name given to the popular strawberry tree, a fruit tree belonging to the ericaceae family. It is a tree that can grow both in coastal areas and inland, provided the cold is not intense. It is a species of tree that usually does not exceed seven meters in height. The strawberry tree has a reddish trunk, a bark with scales in greyish tones and, in its branches, urceolated flowers similar to those of the heathers grow in autumn. It is an evergreen tree of green colors that stand out for its brightness. This tree species can grow both naturally, in mixed forests or hillsides of holm oaks, as a garden plant. Normally in siliceous soils and sunny areas with little wind. One of the most important characteristics of this fruit is the speed of its growth after a fire. This tree species grows back easily, with striking green leaves that make it a symbol of immortality. It takes about a year to mature and turns from yellow to the intense red that heralds its maturity. This happens in autumn. The strawberry tree is a fruit that serves as food for partridges, wild boar and martens. In addition, this fruit is also suitable for human consumption and there are many uses it has in our gastronomy: jams, jellies, preserves and it is even often used to make alcoholic beverages by fermentation, such as, for example, “arbutus liqueur”. This fruit has antioxidants that are often used in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Among its benefits stand out its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. In addition to food, another of the most common uses of the strawberry tree is for decoration due to its beauty and colour.
